Parent Handbook

Handbook Essentials

Albuquerque Public Schools strongly believes that daily school attendance is necessary for students to fully benefit from the instructional program. Excessive absenteeism, regardless of the reason, will negatively impact student academic achievement.

A parent/guardian must notify the school each day that the student will be absent in accordance with the notification procedure established by the school. Only the student’s parent/guardian may report an absence.
To report your child’s absence call 344-1482, press 2. Leave a detailed message.

Absences may be excused for the following reasons with appropriate documentation:

  • Illness (including chronic illness documented on a health plan, IEP or 504 plan)
  • Limited family emergencies; family deaths
  • Medical, health or legal appointments
  • Suspensions
  • Religious commitment
  • School visit
  • Limited extenuating circumstances as approved in advance by the school principal.

All absences for other reasons are unexcused, including:

  • Family vacations outside of the normally scheduled school break
  • Non-school sponsored activities or trips
  • No phone call will also result in an unexcused absence

Absences follow the student throughout the school year, from semester to semester and from school to school

The parent/guardian of those students who reach the two (2) day unexcused absences will receive a phone call.

The parent/legal guardian of those students with five (5) day unexcused absences will receive a phone call. Parent/guardian will be required to sign an attendance contract w/the school staff.

The parent(s)/guardian(s) of students who have 10 full day unexcused absences will receive written notice of the habitual truancy by mail or by personal delivery.

Excessive Absences

Absences due to school-related activities shall not be included when evaluating excessive absences.

A student shall not be allowed more than ten (10) school-related absences per class per semester.

State law requires schools to withdraw a student after ten (10) consecutive days of absence.

Students who are tardy for class must be walked into the school and signed in by their guardian. The parent/guardian will be called if the parent does not walk in the student.

You will receive a phone call if your child is marked tardy or absent.

Dress Code

The Board of Education expects student dress and grooming to reflect high standards of personal conduct is that each student’s attire promotes a positive, safe and healthy atmosphere within the school. Student dress may not present a health or safety hazard, violate municipal or state law or disrupt the educational process. Attire or accessories that advertise display or promote any drug, including alcohol or tobacco, sexual activity, violence, disrespect and/or bigotry towards any group are not acceptable. Unacceptable clothing and accessories include, but are not limited to gang---related attire, excessively tight or revealing clothes, short shorts, and bare midriff, low-cut and/or off the shoulder blouses, spaghetti straps or sleeveless blouses that show undergarments, spiked jewelry, chains, and belts with more than 2 inches excess. “Sagging”, or the wearing of pants below the waist and/or in a manner that allows underwear or bare skin to show, and “bagging”, or the wearing of excessively baggy pants with low hanging crotches are prohibited. As a matter of common courtesy and respect, hats/caps are not to be worn while inside buildings except when there is a specific instructional, safety, religious or medical reason.

Drop-off/Pick-up Procedures

The safest area to drop-off and pick-up your child is located on the west side of our school. Take Griegos to Grande; head north until you see MacArthur on the right. Please do not use the east side of our school. The east side is often too congested and sometimes extremely difficult to see small children. The east side parking lot off of Douglas McArthur Road is locked from 8:30 to 9:15 and 2:45 to 3:15 daily.

Parking Lot Reminders –Please do not use the circular driveway to drop off and pick up your children! It is a FIRE LANE so you will be cited if caught parking there! It is unsafe for children to be crossing this driveway and it is not safe to leave your car parked and unattended! There may be an emergency and you would be blocking the driveway.

Your cooperation is necessary to ensure the safety of our children. Please remember that we are Examples for our children. If we expect our children to be respectful, caring and responsible, then as adults we need to practice these traits at all times and places, including our pick-up and drop-off area.

Do not park in Handicapped marked areas unless you have a Handicapped sticker. The Handicap Loading zone along the drive in the west lot is NOT a parking spot. It is a loading zone. Safety is our priority at MacArthur. Thank you for your assistance in keeping everyone safe.
